Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Company; 1947. George Washington Crile (1864-1943) American surgeon is now formally recoginized as the first surgeon to have succeeded in a direct blood transfusion. Among other procedures he also described a technique for using, regional anesthesia and general anesthesia which is a concept known as balanced anesthesia.
